Wednesday

A bottle of Two Buck Chuck.

A bunch of fresh raspberries and a couple of peaches to make a beautiful bright red jam.
A little too much sage growing in the garden. Well, that is if you're not going to use it to make Sage & Walnut pesto.

Did I tell you how much I'm enjoying summer?

All this and I didn't even mention Eclipse... (Yes I went to the midnight showing!)

Monday

Friday

The grass is doing well.

The Clover is too and the 10 crows in my backyard tell me that they're all quite happy as well. Unfortunately for most everything else in my garden, the rain is slowing stuff down -or perhaps its the Black Walnut tree. The above is a picture of my radishes. These are the only ones I could salvage. I think that I'm probably lacking a ton of nutrients in my soil - perhaps it's all been washed away by the rain?!
See the little birds nest? Thankfully there was no eggs in it. It fell from my maple tree and landed 'smack' onto the patio slabs. I think it's a nice addition to the little bush don't you? I have a little fairy garden door on the opposite side of the tree. It's all quite magical.

The Dragon's Tongue (I just love that name) is in bloom. I quite like the soft blue blooms next to that vibrant burgandy. It looks even better in person! I'm hoping this spreads and/or they have more of it next year at the nursery.

My two curly garlics are going along about their business. I'd like for those to spread as well - cross your fingers. I'm not sure if they do.... the onions have gone to bloom; see them in the back? And that is a sunflower with the big leaves from bird seed - thanks to Miss K. for taking pictures for me last year! They pop up everywhere! I'm hoping for more - natural birdfood!!!
This is the amaranth I bought in the spring. It's not taking off at a fast rate (again, nothing is) but it's gorgeous just the same. On the tag it said you could use the leaves like spinach. Has anyone tried this? And when can I do that? I expect it to get quite tall - perhaps I should read the tag. Yes, I kept it. I can't rely on my memory or my knowledge of flowers to get me by! I think I'm still waiting for that pregancy brain to go away... it's been 5 years...

Thursday

My Monday in pictures.

These are the grocery bags I brought in and emptied. Then I realized I should have taken a picture of everything that was in them... oops... Trust me, they were full. Very, very full. I'm hoping that next week all I have to buy is milk and flour. Cross your fingers 'cause there's not much left in the bank account for anything else!
Probably because I bought a LOT of this kind of stuff! It's summer and around here that means there's going to be snacking - and more snacking and probably not a real meal to be found. I try to keep our 'snacks' fairly filling so you'll notice theres bagels, nuts, carrots and tortellini's on the menu. The kids aren't yet aware that most of this is good for them and if any of you tell them you're going to be in trouble!
I just threw this picture in 'cause I was sooo happy to find this in my garden! The peas are up and producing and E and I are eating them faster than any thing. I don't think they'll make it into the house but who can get mad at a kid eating raw peas?! The squash plants are in full bloom now too. The backyard is a sea of yellow flowers. With any luck the squash borers won't get at the plants and I'll be able to have a boatload of goodness. I'm currently battling the slugs - they're winning...

Some things make me Happy.

Beautiful purple Water lilies. A friend picked them up for me last year but they didn't bloom. I guess this years rain is making them happy too!
I spy with my little eye... Things pop-up in the garden when you're not even looking!
Little snippets of love in a mist (the white and blue flowers). I just love these and their name.
The peas are flowering on the teepee I made for the kids! No snowpeas yet - my mouth is watering just thinking about them.

Friday

For My Mom -

My Peony finally bloomed! Isn't it pretty? The first one opened on Wednesday and now I've got 3 blooms. And do you see the little ant? Pretty cool eh?

Monday

From the Garden!

The 1st strawberry! I'm told it smelled wonderful and tasted even better.

Saturday

Dinner Menu for the week.

It's been raining quite a bit. There's a lake in my backyard. It seems that there's always a lake in my backyard. I really have to work on that rain garden. It's a might bit soggy over there...
Luckily, the rain stopped long enough for E. and I to walk/run/skip/jump downtown and go to the local farmers market. Today was "Go Green Day". I love our little town and all their little gimmics to keep us all happy.
I didn't spend a whole lot, never really do and that's one good reason to shop locally! The potatoes you see were the same price as the bars of soap ($1.00 for both). The soap is made by a place called Marvin Goods. It's glycerin and so far it seems lovely. No scent, pure glycerin and rain water! Fabulous! If you interested you can email them at: clanmarvin@gmail.com and remember it's only 50 cents a bar. I'm also looking into rain barrels from a guy who lives down the street. They deliver and each barrel is $70. Not too shabby.
I'm hoping the plants I got will make it to the fall. There's rosemary, eggplant and a black pepper plant. Cross your fingers! I'm dreaming, dreaming, dreaming of veggie lasagnas and caponatas - as I watch a squirrel dig through the herb garden. Darn squirrels.
Anyway, I ramble... Here's this weeks dinner list. I'm not sure what order they'll be in. Tonight might be roast chicken but I'm currently feeling a little sluggish so it could be nachos and cheese instead...
1. roast chicken, rice and asparagus (from the market today).
2. pizza w/ chicken, spinach and camembart cheese.
3. lentil burgers with salad (lettuce from the garden, shredded apple and carrots).
3. quiche with ham and spinach (also from the garden).
4. chicken soup w/homemade bread (I'm putting flax seed, sesame seeds and sunflower seeds in the bread in hopes of lowering A. and my cholesterol levels).
5. chili
6. baked potatoes with chili and cheese.
And that should take us to next Saturday - market day. The first week in June is the first day of our new Tuesday market! Oh, I'm so excited. Until the garden comes in it really does make it easier to have two market days. I go through a ton (TON) of eggs in our house. I asked the local egg lady if they are going to be at the market... they don't know yet though they are really hoping to be. They make an awesome chicken chorizo. Mmmm.... hungry yet?

Sunday

Get it before the rabbits do!

The picture is a might bit dark. In my defence, it was dark.

Last night after a day of gardening and entertaining the boys, I went to my over flowing lettuce patch and made me a big ol' salad in one of my silver bowls. The assorted lettuces are getting too close together to grow and so, I may have taken a bit more greens than any one person needs in one sitting (or even two). Add in some shredded lettuce (thank you people at Kraft) and some of those edemame (my new favourite) and "VOILA", dinner!

This is why I love summer and gardening soooo very much. Did I tell you my potatoes are up - about an inch already! I feel like I just planted them ('cause I did).

Saturday

Outdoors Again.

The rain stayed away today making it a perfect day to plant a whole bundle of stuff. I purchased way too many plants at Oakland Nurserys' this week and they were starting to wilt/die.

There was no rhyme or reason to what I picked out - kind of like everything I do isn't it? However, I did try to stay away from anything that was purple. Really. You wouldn't believe the amount of purple in my garden right now. It's almost embarrassing. Not that I don't like purple but really, there's a lot of purple...

The thing is, if everything I've planted actually thrives then I'm going to be bursting at the seams. Oh, yes, that means a new plot is going to be coming soon! I'm not entirely sure where I'm going to put it though. Perhaps I'll make a chart of the backyard and you can give me a little bit of advice as to how I might spruce it up.

Anyway, the plants I bought this week are:

Sweet Potato Vine (Blackie) - dark purple/black leaves and light pink flowers

Amaranthus - Early Splendor - this one has the best leaves - gorgeous

Coleus - 3 varieties: Volcano, Black Dragon, and a Carefree Mix (ahh)

Purple Cornflower - the flowers look like birdies (the kind for badminton)

Black Eyed Susans - a two tone flower and a staple to any garden

Lobelia - Blue Moon (good beer - totally unrelated topics...)
Marigolds - yellow - I didn't pick them E. did. He thought they were pretty.

Centaurea - Amethyst in Snow - gorgeous flowers

Avens - Mrs. Bradshaw variety - nothing fancy just like the colour

Lobelia, Cardinal Flower - Queen Victoria - even the stems are nice

Balloon Flower in Blue - this was on my list (hurray). pretty little flowers

Coral Bells - for the shaded areas
Foxglove - also for the shaded areas. I love foxglove.

Coreopsis - tickseed. nothing fancy.
Lemon Verbena - also picked out by Mr.E. I think he thinks it's going to grow lemons.
Petunias - miniature pink - yes, petunias. I potted them and I love them. I used to really dislike them but there's something to be said about their colours.
Dahlia bulbs in orange and yellow. Don't judge me.

From the Garden Pt.1

Salad anyone? Baby lettuce and wild onions with a quick dressing of lemon and olive oil. Super yum! I haven't got everything planted yet (and the onions are wild - as stated above - so I didn't do a darn thing to get them) but I'm s-l-o-w-l-y getting there. It's been dry and because of that my soil is one big, solid mass. We got rain last night and I'm hopeful that I'll be able to plant something this afternoon! Cross your fingers. You were right (you know who you are), I can just throw down some seeds and something pops up (most of the time...).
Pineapple Rhubarb Jam. As you might have guessed the pineapple is from a can but the rhubarb is not. It's early and it's HUGE! I've got enough in my fridge to make a little coffee cake this morning... mmm.... If I stay on top of things this year I might have a pantry full of little goodies. I have my heart set on making Chili Sauce (I can't find the recipe on-line but if I make it then I'll post it), Giardiniera, and jam, jam, jam! Oh, I can hardly wait.

Tuesday

The nursery loved me...

And because of that, I'll be back! I ventured to Oakland Nursery today. Along with some veggie seeds (my favourite is the Ferry Morse Lemon Cucumbers -soo very cute) I picked up some gladiola bulbs (red, white and a bright, bright yellow - guess who picked that one). I'm very, very excited to plant them and though it was gorgeous out last week it's freakin' freezing out today. They'll have to wait until tomorrow to be part of what should be (cross your fingers) a beautiful garden out front! I'm having delusions of grandeur. With my luck not a thing will pop up or else the local bunnies and/or deer and/or opossums and/or squirrels will snack on everything without mercy.

I can see my mums coming up - just tiny little things right now but they're coming. The daffodils are blooming and the tulips are up but I'm thinking those deer took out most of them so it's not going to be as pretty of a display as it normally is. The daylilies on the side of the house are a foot tall and the iris's are popping up as well. Spring should be bright and beautiful. Yesterday I went a little crazy and planted most of the bulbs I had got in the fall from Wal-mart (yikes). They had been marked down to almost nothing (like $0.25 for 25 liatris bulbs). I have Dahlias, Liatris, Caladiums and Tigridia. The Dahlias are most certainly dead but I said a little prayer to the garden Gods and I'd be happy as a clam if one actually poked throught the dirt. Ridiculous? Perhaps.

Most of my neighbours have already sown their lettuce seeds and any of the tougher stuff (potatoes). Me? I'm still way behind - again! I'm not sure how that happens but it does. I've got the spinach seeds spread out and I'm hoping my strawberry plants have a chance this year (darn chipmunks). Don't I sound like I know what I'm doing? It's a little overwhelming and I have to say last year there was once or twice (or six times or I lost count) where I felt like I was totally acting like a fraud - which I am but I don't really want it to get out. This whole gardening thing is a lot harder if you try to figure out the right places to plant and when. Suddenly, you realize you don't have a clue and that it's basically just luck. Okay, maybe it this doesn't sound like 'you' but it's bang on 'me'! And I admit that I'm doing the same thing this year. But I've got wine and I've found these really great crackers (oh yes Ser -the ones from Housewine...) so it's not going to bother me for long.

What have you started? Anything good? Those of you up North should be thinking about it soon and those of you out West have probably got bushes of stuff already. Makes me crazy just thinking about it!

Saturday

Hee hee hee....

The Oasis is open and ready to accept visitors. It's not pretty. Nothing is in bloom but we're here with open margarita bottles and jokes a plenty. So, if you're in the neighbourhood feel free to stop by. It'll give us a reason to celebrate!

Thursday

Things poking through the dirt.

See that there, amongst the snow? Why I do believe it's tulips! I'm very excited...so excited in fact that I had a whole other blog planned for today (yes, occasionally I plan what I'm going to write). I skipped it just so I could show you a little bit of Spring. It gives me hope. That tiny bit of green and, the fact that the sun is shining today. It must be March. I'm practically giddy! I do believe I'm going to start planting something soon... oh, there's a post. Get your thinking caps on.

Friday

How to Make Newspaper Pots

See all those little paper pots? Aren't they cute? Not perfect but I think they'll do the trick. I looked online to find instructions on making paper pots that would work for plantings and quite frankly, aside from the one video I couldn't find anything (note: I'm not a good googler. I get irked when 100 unrelated sites pop up.). Alright, I just googled "How to make paper pots" and about a gazillion things showed up. Crap. Anyway, I did try and it was all a little complicated and I was trying to make my life easier. So, I folded paper until I came up with a little pocket big enough to throw some dirt in and a seed. I'm thinking this doesn't have to be rocket science! If you'd rather buy some fandangled contraption to build your pots you can do that too. Me? I'm on that whole Lent/Budget/Broke thing so I'm just gonna get my son to help me and call it a craft.
Get some kid in the neighbourhood or heck, use your own, to cut 'rings' out of toilet paper rolls. I was going to use all those rolls but then I realized that that expensive toilet paper that we all like so much uses bleached rolls - see the little suckers? Darn it. I'll be recycling those instead. I'm not sure if bleached paper is bad for your garden in such small quantities and I'm too lazy to look it up.
While the kid is cutting you can fold your paper. I like using the local paper and I rip a full piece in half as the half tends to be almost square instead of a long rectangle. This makes it small and then it seems to fold nicely. Read it first before you rip it up okay. Get up to date on local happenings!
So, fold your half paper in half. That looks like a dental coupon there doesn't it? I don't think it's my dentist though... See, that's why you should read it first...

Then, and here's where it gets a might bit tricky (even harder to describe when your 'helpers' talking in your ear as you're trying to type)... take the bottom left hand corner and bring it up to the top of your page. This creates a triangle on the left hand side of your folded paper and eventually, the little pocket you put soil in.
See? There's that little triangle only in this picture I've folded the bottom half of the paper up to the top.... is this making any sense at all? If you look at the previous picture you'll see the dogs legs on the bottom part of the picture and when you fold it up the dogs from the other side are now visible. This might also take off some of your rectangle (the bottom part of the triangle folds too).
Now that you are thoroughly confused, fold the paper to the right about 3 inches or so. Can you see the left side of the triangle under my fingers?

Alright, now fold it again.... and again....

And put one of those handy rings around your column.

And look at that - there's a pouch in there!!! Holy man - who knew?!

And continue going until you've used up all those rings and that newspaper. Hopefully I just saved you $12.99 plus shipping. You can use it to send me some seeds.... or if you don't understand a darn thing I've just written you can keep your $12.99 and use it to buy a bottle of wine instead. In fact, do that. Then drink the wine and come back to this blog and then see if you can make the pots. Yah, try that!
By the way, that was week one on "the list of stuff I have to get out of my closet"...

Monday

Volunteers and Happy Additions.

Nice mug eh? Even better are the Black-Eyed Susans that finally took in the front yard! Hurray for positive thinking (and water and sunshine and all that good stuff...).
Hot peppers anyone? They are HOT and a little more than I can handle. I've got lots!
Gotta love birdseed and well, birds! I didn't plant the sunflowers in my yard - not a one - but I've got plenty and they make me quite happy. Everyone should plant at least one in their garden - yes, yes, it's soooo very basic but it's gorgeous for the same reason! Oh, and do you see the umbrella in the back? It also makes me happy!

Sunday

Name that plant!

Plant Number One: The seed pods (?) start out green and then turn black. There are little yellow flowers though I've never seen them open. And yes, that's a piece of bamboo I used to hold it up. I think it can stand by itself but it started leaning and I wanted to be sure it stayed upright or else the kids would have trampled it by now.
A close up of No.1's seed pods - interesting no???
Plant Number Two: It might also be a grass. I think it might have been in with the bird seed I bought and just came to be. Funny thing is I saved this and pulled a bunch of stuff I shouldn't have... Darn it.
Here's a close-up of No. 2. Nothing miraculous really. I think I like the height of the plant and the branches. It takes up an awful lot of space in my herb garden.

Thursday

BBQ, Ice Cream and Fairy Flies.

Today was S.'s last day of school. He's officially graduated to Grade 2. It was a relatively uneventful year (thank goodness) aside from the occasional "friendship mishap" and his grades never slipped. Quite the contrary, because his teacher was patient, encouraging and incredibly understanding, it seemed as though his grades and his willingness to learn increased! This was a great sigh of relief to me - to have a child that loves his teacher and the academic subjects he's being taught.

The last day of school has always been a big deal for me - I suppose it would be to any child... At our house we try to nonchalantly make a big deal out of things. I'm really not a big fan of a large crowds so it's usually just a family affair - and today was no exception. When S. got home from school we decided to have some down time (ie. I needed a nap!). Then it was time for dinner = BBQ! - outside! Again, just the family (there's 4 of us in case you didn't know). But a big dinner with all the fixings. Then more playing... phew... after which E. inadvertently took a toy to the eye, which causes crying, which causes lying down, which, when you're little, causes sleep...

And now, it's just two grown-ups and one second grader... what to do? Slip out to the local ice cream shop for a sundae of course! Then, sit around eating together, talking together and watching the sun go down - and the fairy flies come out (also known as fireflies and/or lightening bugs). We've decided to call them fairy flies because they showed up first in the neighbours yard where we're sure the fairies live (Enid Blyton is well loved by me). Such a special place and one where explorers roam free and Bright Orange Tigers could *pop* up at any moment.

My husband and I watched as S. chased fairy flies, cursed the bunnies running through the garden and marvelled as a deer bounced through our yard not even a 100 feet from us. I have to admit it's one of those times I wish I could remember forever. I'm not sure where the time goes or how it is that I forget these moments but luckily for me my life seems to be filled with them.
Thanks be to God (sorry to get all religious but sometimes the moment just calls for it).

Monday

What a difference a day can make.

As of Saturday night I only had 2 flower/vegetable beds in the backyard and 5 new trees. A day later and I've added one more flower bed and 2 new trees. I've also planted an assortment of odds and ends in the burm at the end of the vegetable garden (and now it looks less like a burm and more like a natural transition into the yard), a few Hostas and a couple of different Coleus'. In five years time my backyard is going to look awesome. Five years, maybe ten but I'm hoping for five... But next Spring I will have Purple Iris' and daffodils and maybe even some lilacs in bloom. The pain in my back/legs/arms will all be worth it then.

Another special thank you goes out to my neighbour Ms. C for her help and assistance on getting my garden started. Her garden is truly lovely and if one day it's on the garden tour I'll let you know!
*pictures of my new additions later... sorry... feeling a bit exhausted - I wonder why? The pictures above are the new coleus' that I've planted - the red is Merlin's Magic and the brown is Sedona - both are better looking in person!
